Default Gospel influence in R & B

Mid to late 1950s R & B

Fats Domino made the top 30 of the pop charts in 1952 and 1953, then the top 10 with "Ain't That a Shame".[12] Ray Charles came to national prominence in 1955 with "I Got a Woman". It was an upfront use of gospel music conventions in an R&B context. Big Bill Broonzy said of Charles' music: "He's mixing the blues with the spirituals... I know that's wrong."[13] At the urging of Leonard Chess at Chess Records, Chuck Berry had reworked a fiddle tune with a long history, "Ida Red".

so basically any music can be made r & b with a spiritual gospel flavor with some jazz thrown in?

You can feel the gospel. That's why a lot of Elvis shifted over into R & B. he did a lot of gospel and the influence you can see in his later work. Even people who don't listen to gospel can acknowledge the heavy base it gives a tune. Everybody knows and identifies that style.

Did you see that movie with Tom Hanks where they all rob the bank? Tht has got to be one of the ebst soundtracks ever. Trouble In, trouble out, is amazing music. Serious gospel influences there. Gospel in that soundtrack too. Brilliant mixing gospel with soul and rap.
